Do AI translation tools help or hinder language acquisition?
Undoubtedly, AI has changed the way we learn and assist our work effectively. When organizing massive resources, AI can help us to do it and give us completed information in a short time. If you lack some ideas about work or a prompt to do activities, AI can search and give various suggestions. And for students, they use AI to summarize online sources, find advice and learn new things.
Since technology has grown so fast that it affects every field to a different extent, it’s essential to learn from different fields to improve our skills. For most people, they use AI to help them learn a new language. Because some jobs require employees to know at least two languages, it’s crucial to pick up new languages in this international world. AI can not only teach you from basic to advanced but also make a course based on your level. With so many advantages, AI must be properly used to help us learn languages.
First, AI can reduce the time to check our grammar and speaking mistakes. Traditional methods to learn English costs people a lot of time. When in school, one teacher should check every student’s grammar and speaking mistakes at the same time. One teacher can’t take good care of students’ answers and questions from many aspects. This situation makes some students feel frustrated because they don’t know how to learn and improve it.
But with AI’s help, students can immediately know where the mistake is and revise it. AI can diagnose your pronunciation and use its data to tell you how to speak. Also it checks your writing and marks the wrong grammar. It turns out that students can effectively learn and correct their mistakes and teachers can cooperate their knowledge with AI to give students better teaching. This shows that using those tools not only changes how people learn languages but also lets people have happier ways to learn language between their break time.
What’s more, we can have personal courses which are generated by AI to make learning more engaging. For a few people, it’s hard to follow the pace in a class and may be distracted by other things. That’s why they choose AI learning tools to help them because AI tools can analyze problems and situations to give some tips to learn. Compared to humans that need some time to solve learners’ problems, AI uses its database to find the course that is suitable for users.
Furthermore, AI combines games and courses to attract users’ attention. Thanks to AI language tools, they not only can perfectly change old, boring courses into different types of mini games like flash cards but also add reality into their speaking courses to make people familiar with real situations. According to Marxaboxon (2025), “Students reported that the use of applications such as Duolingo and Babbel increased their engagement due to the interactive nature of tasks and the gamified approach to language practice”. This tells us that by using suitable methods to learn languages, we can not only gain new knowledge but also know the happiness of learning.
Despite AI’s powerful ability to learn languages, some people insist on not using AI because AI translation lacks human emotion. Since AI needs more time to train and revise its mistakes in databases, novels and comic books still need humans’ knowledge to do a better translation (De la Vall& Araya, 2023). However, AI’s accessibility and convenience make learning languages easier for humans to pick them up. Humans learn different languages not only for communication but also learning various rules and cultures between every language. AI is an assistant that saves time and checks the wrong things that we didn’t notice. Knowing the differences between two languages still need learners to deeply investigate them (隅田英一郎, 2023).
On the other hand, there are few materials that teach how to speak. Most teachers teach speaking by communicating with students. But with AI’s help, teachers can make materials by collecting online sources and textbooks to let AI organize. When practicing, AI also helps teachers to check whether students speak correctly or not. As a result, those resources make teachers more convenient to prepare course material (Chang, 2024). If we use AI properly, it will be the best partner for our academic assignments.
Without a doubt, AI can make people learn new languages more effectively. With AI, people can make learning easier and more engaging. AI assists our learning and collecting. It also effectively replaces the traditional teaching method and gives teachers more choice to prepare the courses. And that’s why people need to learn how to use it correctly. After all, learning languages allows us to connect with this international world.
